WHAT IS THE DIASPORA ?
The (African) DI·AS·PO·RA is the voluntary and involuntary movement of Africans and their descendants to various parts of the world.
To sum it up loosely, if you identify as “black”/indigenous/of African descent and are living in the Americas, Caribbean, Europe, etc., YOU are a descendant of the DIASPORA —the unprecedented, forced human migration.
Scattered, but Forever Connected.

Established in 2020, Child of the Diaspora is both a women + men lifestyle brand based in Los Angeles founded by Janine Belvin. COTD is an expression of unity, a form of protest and in and of itself, resistance. More than a garment, the COTD tee serves as a personal billboard that aspires to be a symbol of liberation for the masses.

We like to describe our tee as “an effortless solution to the classic t-shirt and jeans ensemble.”

Unlike the subtlety of the tee, the imagery within the brand purposefully encapsulates the nuances within black culture that are constantly overlooked by most, but are crucial to how we define the world and how we use our gifts to reshape how “they” see us.

We honor our ancestors and our being by following the teachings of "Sankofa," which can be translated to mean, "go back to the past and bring forward that which is useful."

Connecting the past with the present allows us to be more effective agents in shaping our understanding of the forces that will have an impact on our collective future as citizens of the planet. We all share the responsibility for defining the terms by which we live. We honor those who have shown us the way and taught us the strategies for survival, endurance and growth.

We value quality, consistency and philanthropy.

COTD is a love letter to our community, our ancestors, and black culture as a whole. Being black is an honor. This collection is a way to liberate ourselves and others.
